Stone Harbor was marketed as an oasis by the sea to wealthy Philadelphia residents who were looking for rest and relaxation in the heat of the summer months. Once they arrived, those Philadelphians realized they had stumbled upon a little slice of beach heaven. Besides restaurants and shopping excursions, Stone Harbor offers the following attractions: The Wetlands Institute, the Stone Harbor Bird Sanctuary, and a museum. The Wetlands Institute promotes the conservation and preservation of coastal ecosystems through education that is fun and intriguing for those of any age. Designated beaches allow for swimming, rafting, and surfboards. Everyone who is 12 and over must wear a purchased beach tag beginning on the Saturday before Memorial Day through Labor Day. Leashed dogs are allowed on Stone Harbor's beaches between 7:00 PM and sunset. For high school, Stone Harbor's children attend classes in Middle Township. Stone Harbor is located in the 2nd Congressional district and the state's 1st legislative district. The local government consists of a mayor and six council members. The mayor is elected by voters to a four-year term. The council members serve three-year terms on a staggered basis.
